My name is Katherine Petcoff and I am a photographer based in Denver, Colorado. I am very passionate about photography and travel, which for me forms the perfect union of seeing and experiencing unique cultural and natural landscapes through the lens of a camera. The majority of my work comes from travel, both domestic and abroad, with subjects ranging from traditional travel genres, to nature and landscapes, to geometric design.
I always had an interest in photography, but had not pursued anything formal until I started college at Pacific University. Intro to Photography was a very popular class that tended to fill up quickly, but on the advice of an upperclassman I was able to meet with the photography professor and convince him that I was worth holding a spot for. When I look back, I can say that that decision truly changed the trajectory of my life in more ways than one. Within the span of a semester, I found a passion for photography that I’ve carried with me ever since. Ultimately I earned a degree in Studio Art and Anthropology, which perfectly combined my passions for photography and culture.
I learned the fundamentals of photography using my Grandad’s old Olympus OM-10 film camera and developing via traditional darkroom techniques. Now, I shoot exclusively with a digital SLR and utilize digital technologies for processing. As wonderful as digital photography is, I must admit that I sometimes miss the s
implicity of a film camera. When it comes to processing, I’m a bit of a purist. While it can be fun to test the potential of digital processing, I much prefer to keep it simple and enhance the beauty of a scene as I originally witnessed it. In the filter-happy age that we live in where everyone has a camera at their disposal at all times, I think that it’s much more interesting to see natural images to those that have been over-processed.
